Requirements

  • The app: macOS 13 Ventura or later, on Apple silicon or Intel, and a Gmail or Google Workspace account. (On Workspace, your administrator may need to allow the app.)
  • The assistant: a Mac with Apple silicon, macOS 26 or later, and Apple Intelligence turned on. On other Macs the app works fully, without the assistant.
  • Voice input: on-device speech recognition for your language, and permission to use speech recognition.

Turning on the assistant

  1. Open System Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri and turn on Apple Intelligence. (If it isn't listed, your Mac, macOS version, or language and region setting doesn't support it yet.)
  2. macOS downloads its model in the background. Until it is ready, the assistant says "Apple Intelligence is still getting its model ready".
  3. Open an email in Path Tracer Mail, open the assistant (the sidebar button in the toolbar), and ask about that email.

The assistant is a beta. It works on the email thread you have open: "summarise this", "what do they need from me?", "draft a reply saying Thursday works". With no email open, it says so. It runs entirely on your Mac, and a reply is shown to you first and saved as a draft only when you click; it never sends.

Voice: the first time you use the microphone button, macOS asks for permission to use speech recognition and the microphone. You can change these later in System Settings → Privacy & Security.

Disconnecting an account

In Path Tracer Mail, click your address above the message list and choose Disconnect <your address>…. This revokes the app's access at Google — mail, calendar and Drive — and deletes everything the app stored for that account on your Mac. You can also revoke access at any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions.

Uninstalling

The disk image the app came in contains uninstall.sh and these instructions, word for word:

How to uninstall Path Tracer

1. FIRST, disconnect each mailbox, so the app's access is revoked at Google:
in Path Tracer Mail, click your address above the message list and choose
"Disconnect <your address>...". (Or later, at
   https://myaccount.google.com/permissions.)

2. Open Terminal (Applications > Utilities) and paste this line:

   bash "/Volumes/Path Tracer 1.5.3/uninstall.sh"

Type it exactly like that, starting with "bash": run any other way from
this disk image, macOS stops the script.

3. It asks before it starts, removes the apps and their logs, then asks
AGAIN before deleting your data (sign-in tokens, cached mail, settings).
Your mail itself is in Gmail and is not touched.

The version number in the path is the one on your disk image.

Something not working?

  • Signed out of Google, or "Sign in again": click Sign In… in the message, or use your address menu → Google.
  • Logs (which never contain your mail's content) are in ~/Library/Logs/Path Tracer/; attaching the newest one to an email helps us.
